The retail industry is increasingly employing the use of self-service kiosks in order to replace traditional transitional management standard to meet customer needs in a variety of services. In general kiosks require multiple ports and high bandwidth. The VIA Em-ITX platform provides rich multimedia capabilities in addition to abundant connectivity options. VIA's first mainboard based on the Em-ITX form factor - VIA EITX-3000 - includes a built-in 2D/3D graphics engine. The EITX-3000 provides connectivity through four serial ports (two RS-232 and two RS-232/422/485, configurable in BIOS setup), six USB 2.0 ports, and two Gigabit Ethernet ports.

The EMIO-3210, an Em-IO expansion module designed for kiosk applications, is good for the system that needs multiple COM ports and high bandwidth. It supports six serial ports (six RS-232/422/485 ports, configurable in BIOS setup) and two IEEE 1284 parallel ports. A system with the combination of an EITX-3000 board and an EMIO-3210 can support 10 serial ports and two parallel ports!
